Art in WW2

30 chilling facts that will creep you out

Combat artists captured the realities of war

In WW2, combat artists captured war's realities by taking photographs of the horrors and complexities. These artists often took photographs of the war in close quarters and embedded themselves with the units they were assigned. Orville Fisher was one such artist. He carried a pad of waterproof paper around his wrist and sketched D-Day.

These artists not only documented the war but also created thousands of pieces of art that were published in magazines and publications. Many of these works were also displayed in national exhibitions. These works chronicled various battles and actions in the Pacific and European theatres. The captions often described the events in the photographs.

Artists For Victory group

Artists for Victory in WW2 was an international non-profit group that brought together more than 10 000 artists to help in the war effort. They partnered with governments and businesses to create visual materials about war to promote the war effort. The mission of the group was to aid the United States in winning the war.

weird and creepy facts

The group was created by artists to combat the evils of philistinism and use their artistic skills to aid the war effort. It was the first such group and promised to produce five million hours art for the war effort.

Looted art

Many pieces of art taken by Nazis during World War II are now back with their rightful owners. Recently, Pierre Auguste Renoir's Nudes in Landscape revealed that the painting had been taken from the German Jewish banker. Hugo Simon was a banker but also an art collector. The painting was returned by Simon's heirs.

Although most of the art that was looted in WW2 has been returned, there are still many pieces that remain in the wrong hands. Many of these items were sent to the USSR in the course of the war. Russia is legally bound to return them. Many of these pieces are now in Moscow's museums. Poland plans to submit seven additional restitution request to Russia.

Recovered objects from the war

You can find out the provenance of art objects using many resources. The National Gallery of Art did extensive research about the history of art items. They focused their efforts on World War II and discovered many connections between art objects, and their owners. The website also offers extensive archival references and wartime histories, making it easy to discover the origin of an object's provenance.

most kept secrets

There are three main collections of objects recovered after the war. These collections contain a mixture of cultural and historical objects that were looted or traded. The Nazis plunder cultural property, especially Jewish property. To identify the most valuable collections, they used systematic methods. While some artifacts seized were eventually returned to the rightful owners, others are still unaccounted for.

Donated objects to the USSR

The National Archives of the United States recently released a CDROM, which documents the transfer of cultural heritage from the United States of America to the Soviet Union. It includes facsimile inventories of approximately half a millenial cultural objects. These cultural treasures were most likely taken by the Nazis and sent to Germany. The Soviet copies of these items don't exist in Russia’s archives.

These items were used in the USSR's war effort. In the epic battle against Nazi Germany, more than 25 million Soviet citizens were killed during WW2. Despite multiple defeats over the first 18months of war, the Soviet Union rebuilt itself and marched to Berlin. The United States provided enormous economic and military aid to the Soviet Union to support the war effort.

Have you ever wondered what amount of trash is generated each day worldwide?

According to the United Nations there are more than 25 billion tons of garbage produced each year.

Most of this rubbish ends up in landfills or incinerators. But, what happens when those dumpsters fill up? All that trash ends up being shipped out of country. It is then dumped in other countries, where it pollutes their ecosystems. But now, thanks to the work of one man, we know exactly where all this trash goes. His name is Mike Sexton. He is the founder of Waste Watchers. He watches over trucks that transport trash across North America. He reports back to us about the next steps.

Sexton claims he is very satisfied with his job. CNN spoke with Sexton that they have a lot fun. "We often see large rigs passing through our town and we will follow them. "Sexton began to follow truck drivers around 20 years ago.

He said, "I fell in love with it."

His favorite story is about a driver that pulled into an abandoned gas station just outside Los Angeles. Sexton said that the man was searching for a place to store his stuff. "He drove down the road to see this building. He pulled over and went in. "There was a pair of large, full-sized roll-off boxes. The man took all the stuff out and filled up his truck with more. "Then he took out everything and began to fill up the truck. There were a bunch of old tires, rags, furniture, mattresses, boxes, bottles, cans, and whatever else. "It was just total chaos. But it had been cleaned out before he came along. There wasn't any trash anywhere."

This begs the question: Why? It's because this area used to be a recycle center. People would drive from all over the country to recycle their trash. "They'd bring their household items and take them to this building," Sexton explained. And after they finished, they would leave the empty containers behind.

This can happen hundreds of times a week. It could happen hundreds of thousands of times a week. The truck eventually stops running because it has become so jammed with junk. The owner eventually abandons the vehicle.

Trash is not the only problem our planet faces.

These tiny plastic particles make up the majority of the particles. Some end up in incinerators or landfills. Some of these plastics end up in rivers or oceans.

Experts warn of a possible global food crisis if nothing is done. "If we keep going like we're going, we're not going to make it," one expert warned. But even though scientists agree that the world is headed toward disaster, most people don't seem worried.

What is your most secretive community?

It may surprise you to hear the answer. It might even make you uncomfortable because it challenges our perception of reality and how we live. However, there's a reason for this place to exist. It's not what we would expect.

The City of God was its name by the ancient Greeks. It was called the City of Destruction by the Bible.

It is called Kashi (Kashmir in India). It is called Novgorod (Russia).

Here in America, however, it is called The Village That Disappeared.

One small New York State town with just 1,200 people vanished. No bodies, cars, houses, nothing was left behind except a road sign pointing to its former location.

This little community vanished and no trace remains to indicate where or when it disappeared. Some say it was swallowed up by the Earth. Some claim it was destroyed by a meteorite impact. Still, others say aliens took it away.

Despite what may have happened, the people who lived in this once-thriving area are confident that their town will not be lost forever. They had just moved from one town to the other.

You can even track the disappearance of Zugspitz on a dedicated website.

You might be wondering where this town went. It's in Switzerland.

Zugspitze is situated on the border between Germany und Austria. Lake Zugspitze can be found just beyond the summit.

It has always fascinated my that so many towns have disappeared but others still exist. Why does some vanish while others remain? I decided to investigate.

I wanted to know more about the mysterious disappearing towns. Is it possible for a place to vanish? How can a town disappear from existence?

It turned out that there are many theories about disappearing towns. One theory holds that a town disappears if all its buildings are demolished. Another theory is that the town moves to another place. A third theory claims that the town never existed at all.

The fact is that hundreds of towns all over the world have been swept away by the ground, despite theories to the contrary. This video examines both the history and current status.

What is the most mysterious location on Earth?

Antarctica is one of the most mysterious places on Earth.

This is why we find it so captivating. It is unlike any other place on Earth.

It is isolated, remote, and very hard to visit. It is not what you see.

This natural wonder is also home to some of the strangest wildlife species.

Let's look at how this extraordinary destination became so mysterious.

Antarctica: The South Pole

No one knows exactly why Antarctica was named Antarctica. Some believe it refers to "land of ice". Others believe it comes out of Greek mythology.

Antarktis was an ancient Greek name that was given to the island where Zeus and his twin brothers, Zeus. According to legend, one twin was born in winter. Therefore, the name antarctic.

Others think the name came from the Greek words anti, meaning against, and tropos meaning turn. This would signify land turned away the sun.

Whatever the reason Antarctica holds a special fascination, people have always loved it.

It is the driest, windiest of all continents. There are no trees, plants, or animals here because it is too cold.

Yet, the frozen desert is alive with life.

Here, 90 percent live of all species of living things. There are about 50% of the world's animal, plant and plant species.

And what makes Antarctica such a unique environment? Here, water freezes into ice instead of evaporating into the air.

This causes large amounts of ice to float above ground.

These glaciers cover more than 80% of the continent. And they're growing larger every year.

The Antarctic Ice Sheet has grown 60 feet in the past 60 years.

If the melting goes on, the sea level may rise by as much as 200 feet. It could result in massive flooding all over the world.

This does not mean that everyone is wrong. Some scientists claim that global warming could be good for us. They claim that the melting of ice sheets could accelerate as temperatures rise. This would lead to flooding that removes tons of toxic chemicals and soil from our bodies.

Others, however, warn that this theory sounds almost like a plot for a science fiction film.
