Grover Cleveland (President of the United States) had a very important procedure. It was a medical wonder. He was capable of removing a tumor in his mouth. He lived a long, happy life after the surgery.
The surgery was performed in 1893. At that time, the country was in severe economic depression due to bank failures and the railway bubble. This made it difficult for the media to report the news. Cleveland decided to conceal the operation to avoid panic. His plan involved using his friend's yacht.
He had been diagnosed in 1893 as having cancer of the mouth. He had a large bump at the roof of his mouth, which doctors discovered when they examined the patient. This was most likely a sign of cancer. Although the tumor was severe, doctors were reluctant to disclose it. They feared that if the news spread, the nation would go into a swoon.

The doctors did not mention it publicly, but a team of surgeons set sail on a friend's yacht to perform the surgery. The patient was then sedated by an anesthesiologist who injected him with ether. The doctor removed a large portion of the upper right jawbone and fitted a hard rubber dental prosthesis.
It is difficult to keep such a big secret in today's world. Presidents are not as open about their health as they used to be, and many people hide illnesses. The American press was an amazing institution in the 1890s. The surgery that took place was truly a surprise to many.
The operation was conducted on a yacht off the coast of Long Island, New York. On the Oneida, several prominent doctors were present. Doctors used rudimentary equipment, but performed the operation with remarkable efficiency. Dr. Joseph Bryant led the surgical team. He was joined by a dentist, Ferdinand Hasbrouck, and four other doctors.
Several days after the operation, Cleveland gave a speech to congress. Cleveland and the Oneida crew talked on the boat while they were returning to New York. Cleveland lost some part of his hearing after the surgery, but quickly recovered.

Five teeth were removed and a portion of the upper right jawbone was also removed by the surgeons. To close the gap, they fitted a vulcanized rubber prosthetic. These were the only visible signs of the procedure, which was done entirely in the patient's mouth.
While it may not be the most amazing medical feat of its day, Grover Cleveland’s secret surgery is quite impressive. In 1917, the news of the operation only became public a few years later. Not only was it a medical miracle, but it also had a significant effect on the president's life.
Although Cleveland's surgery was performed in the presence of a team medical professionals, it was also a publicity stunt. His tumor was removed while he was on a yacht, which was cleverly kept the public in the dark.
FAQ
What is your most secretive community?
The answer may shock you. This may make you feel uncomfortable as it challenges your perception of reality and the way we live. There is a reason this place exists and it's not as you might expect.
It was also called the City of God in ancient Greek. In the Bible, it was known as the City of Destruction.
It is also called Kashi in India (Kashmir). It's also known as Novgorod in Russia.
But here in America, it goes by another name - The Town That Disappeared.
One tiny town in western New York State lost its 1,200 inhabitants without trace. There were no bodies, cars or houses left behind, but a road sign that pointed to the former location was all that was left.
This little community vanished and no trace remains to indicate where or when it disappeared. Some say the earth swallowed it up. Some claim it was destroyed by a meteorite impact. Some believe that it was taken by aliens.
The people of this once-thriving community, however, are positive that the town won't disappear forever. They had just moved to another town.
There's even a website that tracks the disappearances and recoveries of Zugspitz.
So, where exactly did this town go? Well, it's in Switzerland!
The border of Austria and Germany is at Zugspitze. A huge lake, Lake Zugspitze, is located just beyond the summit.
It has always fascinated my that so many towns have disappeared but others still exist. Why does some vanish while others remain? I decided to investigate.
I wanted more information about the mysterious disappearing of towns. Is it possible for a place to vanish? How can a town disappear from existence?
It turns out that there are several theories about the phenomenon of vanishing towns. One theory holds that a town disappears if all its buildings are demolished. Another theory is that the town moves to another place. A third theory states that the town didn't exist at all.
Although theories may be a bit speculative, it is a fact that numerous towns have been destroyed by the elements. This video looks into the history of those places and investigates their current status.
Did you know that there are approximately 1.6 billion metric tons of trash produced every day in the world?
According to the United Nations there are more than 25 billion tons of garbage produced each year.
The majority of this garbage ends up in incinerators or landfills. But what happens when the dumpsters become full? Most of that trash is shipped out of the country. It is then dumped in other countries, where it pollutes their ecosystems. But now, thanks to the work of one man, we know exactly where all this trash goes. Mike Sexton is his real name. He is the owner of Waste Watchers. His job involves monitoring the movements and routes of trash trucks across North America. He reports back to us about the next steps.
Sexton says he finds his job very satisfying. CNN asked Sexton if he thought it was a lot of fun. "We see these big trucks coming through town, so we'll keep following them. "Sexton started following truck drivers nearly 20 years ago.
"I just fell in love with it," he said.
Sexton's favorite story was about a driver who stopped at an abandoned gas station in Los Angeles. Sexton recalls, "The guy was searching for somewhere to put his loads." "He drove down the street and saw this building. So he pulled over and went inside. "There was a pair of large, full-sized roll-off boxes. The man took all the stuff out and filled up his truck with more. He then looked around and decided to load everything. There were tires, rags. furniture, mattresses. boxes, bottles, cans. "It was just total chaos. But it had been cleaned out before he came along. There wasn't any trash."
This is the reason why it happened. It is because the location used to belong to a recycling centre. People who found out about this facility would drive to it to recycle their trash. Sexton said that people would bring their household items to the building and then leave empty containers behind.
You might see this happen hundreds of times a day. The truck can be stopped running if it is so full of junk that it has to come back hundreds of times per week. And eventually, the owner decides to abandon the vehicle.
However, trash is not the only problem on our planet.
These tiny plastic particles make up the majority of the particles. Some end up in incinerators or landfills. Some are washed into rivers and oceans. Others end up with fish in their stomachs.
Experts warn us that we may soon face an international food shortage if things don't change. Experts warn that "if we keep going the way we are, we're not going make it," although scientists agree that the world is heading toward disaster. Most people, however, don't seem to be concerned.
How does the brain control the functions of your body?
The brain communicates with other organs to ensure their cooperation. Your body's functions are controlled by your brain. It tells your stomach how to digest food and your lungs how to inhale oxygen; it also tells your arms, legs and feet to move.
Your brain is made up billions of nerve cell networks connected in groups known as neurons. Neurons communicate by sending electrical signals, called action potentials, on axons. Every neuron has an outer cell membrane that surrounds its nucleus. Inside the membrane are channels that allow ions such as sodium and potassium to enter and leave the cell. The neuron is lit by an electric charge created by the movement of ions.
Neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that release neurotransmitters when a neuron fires up, can be found in the space between the neurons and the next one. Neurotransmitters bind with receptors on the second nerve cell, opening ion channel channels to allow ions in and out. In turn, the second neuron also fires.
Neurotransmitter releases occur when a presynaptic neurons receives an input from another neuron. An impulse travels along a synaptic link between the two neuron. The transmitter binds at the receptors of the post-synaptic Neuron and triggers its firing.
They are vital for the communication between nerve cells. They are also responsible for coordinating activity between various parts of the brain.
What is the most mysterious place on earth?
Antarctica is the most mysterious continent on Earth.
We find this place so fascinating. Because it is unlike anything else on Earth.
It is remote, isolated, and extremely difficult to visit. It is not what you see.
This natural wonder is also home to some of the strangest wildlife species.
So let's explore how this remarkable destination became famous for its mystery.
Antarctica: The South Pole
Antarctica's name is a mystery. Some believe it means "land of ice." Others believe it comes out of Greek mythology.
Antarktis was an ancient Greek name that was given to the island where Zeus and his twin brothers, Zeus. One of the twins was said to have been born in winter. Thus, the term antarctic.
Others think the name came from the Greek words anti, meaning against, and tropos meaning turn. This would be land turned away form the sun.
No matter the reason, Antarctica is a place that has always fascinated people.
It is the driest, windiest of all continents. There are no trees, plants, or animals here because it is too cold.
And yet, this frozen wasteland is teeming with life.
Here, 90 percent live of all species of living things. There are about 50% of the world's animal, plant and plant species.
And what makes Antarctica such a unique environment? Here, water is frozen into ice rather than vaporizing into the air.
This creates large masses of ice that float above the ground.
These glaciers cover more than 80% of the continent. These glaciers are getting larger each year.
The Antarctic Ice Sheet has grown 60 feet in the past 60 years.
If the melting goes on, the sea level may rise by as much as 200 feet. That could cause massive flooding around the globe.
Not everyone believes this is bad news. Some scientists claim that global warming could be good for us. They suggest that rising temperatures could cause ice sheet melt faster, leading to floods that flush out toxic chemicals from soil and bodies.
Others warn that this theory sounds like something out of a science-fiction movie.

Hollywood scandals that stunned the world
It's shocking to see someone make a name for themselves. It's even more frightening to see them fall from grace.
The best thing about watching how an industry reacts when it makes mistakes is the best part. There are many stories about celebrities who drank excessively. Some even died young because of it.
It's worse when stars make public their problems, and then are ignored by everyone. That's where we found ourselves last week.
Heath Ledger, after a long and successful professional career, finally gave in to his demons. He took too many prescription pills and died shortly after.
His family and his friends struggled with the news and the media went after him.
Heath was once considered to be one of today's most talented actors. Two Academy Awards nominations went to Heath for his performance on Brokeback Mountain.
Heath did more than act. He also directed films including A Knight's Tale. Monster's Ball and Iron Man.
Hollywood loved Heath but he grew too large for his boots. He began to drink heavily and took drugs. He finally went to rehab, and he was clean.
Now that he was sober, he wanted to make amends. He made a documentary called "Room 237," that chronicled the making and release of The Shining. It was originally scheduled to release this year, but it won’t be available in theaters until next.
Heath attempted to get into Hollywood every time. Heath was in fact arrested twice on drug charges.
We are not suggesting that Heath should be allowed back into the show business. However, it would have been nice if he could have gotten some help before things spiraled out of control.
We hope Heath’s story serves as a cautionary tale for others who think they might still be able to have it all.
