Combat artists captured the realities of war
Combat artists were able to capture images of the horrors, complexities and realities of war during WW2. These artists often worked in the field, embedding themselves with their designated units, so that they could capture the war at close quarters. Orville Fisher was one such artist. He carried a pad of waterproof paper around his wrist and sketched D-Day.
In addition to documenting the war, these artists created thousands of works of art that were used in publications and magazines. Many of these works were also part of national exhibitions. After the war, there were three main collections of objects. These collections contain a variety cultural and historical items that were traded or looted. The Nazis purged cultural property, especially Jewish properties. They used systematic methods for identifying the most valuable collections. A new CD-ROM by the National Archives of the United States documents the transfer of cultural treasures from the United States to the Soviet Union, presenting facsimile inventories of over half a million cultural objects. Most of these cultural treasures were plundered by the Nazis and taken to Germany, but the Soviet copies of these items do not exist in Russia's archives.
These items were needed to help the USSR in its war effort. Over 25 million Soviet citizens lost their lives in the battle against Nazi Germany during WW2. Despite countless defeats in the first 18 months of the war, the Soviet Union rebuilt and marched to Berlin. Sexton said he enjoys his job. CNN interviewed Sexton and said that he has a lot of fun. "You know, we see these big rigs come through town, and we'll follow them. "Sexton started following truck drivers nearly 20 years ago.
He stated that he fell in love with the product.
His favorite story involved a driver who pulled off at an abandoned gas station near Los Angeles. Sexton recalls, "The guy was searching for somewhere to put his loads." "He drove down the road to see this building. So he pulled over and went inside. "There was a pair of large, full-sized roll-off boxes. The man got everything out of the truck and began filling it up again. He then looked around and decided to load everything. There were many old tires, furniture, rags and mattresses. "It was just an absolute mess. But it had been cleaned out before he came along. There wasn’t trash everywhere."
What is the explanation? It's because this area used to be a recycle center. People would drive from all over the country to recycle their trash. Sexton said that people would bring their household items to the building and then leave empty containers behind.
