Antarctica: The South Pole
Antarctica's name is a mystery. Some believe it is "land of the ice". Others believe it comes out of Greek mythology.
Antarktis, the Greek name for the island on which Zeus' twin brothers were conceived, was used in ancient Greece. According to legend, one twin was born in winter. Thus, the term antarctic.
Others think the name came from the Greek words anti, meaning against, and tropos meaning turn. This would translate to land that is turned away from the sun.
No matter the reason, Antarctica is a place that has always fascinated people.
It is the driest, windiest of all continents. Because it is too frigid, there are no trees, animals, or plants.
Yet, the frozen desert is alive with life.
Here are about 90% of all the living creatures on Earth. It is home to approximately half of all world's animal and plant species.
And what makes Antarctica such a unique environment? Here, water is frozen into ice rather than vaporizing into the air.
This causes large masses to form of ice which float high above the ground.
These glaciers cover more than 80% of the continent. They're getting bigger every year.
The Antarctic Ice Sheet has grown 60 feet in the past 60 years.
The sea level could rise to 200 feet if the melting continues. This could lead to widespread flooding.
This does not mean that everyone is wrong. Global warming may be beneficial for some scientists. According to scientists, global warming could be good for us because the melting of the ice sheets will accelerate, which can lead to floods that release toxic chemicals into our soil and bodies.
Others, however, warn that this theory sounds almost like a plot for a science fiction film.
How does your brain control your body's functions?
The brain relays messages to other parts of the body to ensure their functionality. Everything in your body is controlled and managed by your brain. It tells you your stomach to digest food; your lungs to inhale air; and it tells you your arms and legs how to move.
Your brain is made of billions, or neurons, of nerve cells. Neurons communicate by sending electrical signals, called action potentials, on axons. Every neuron has an outer cell membrane that surrounds its nucleus. Channels within the membrane allow ions such potassium and sodium to enter and leave the cells. The neuron fires when there is ion movement.
Neurotransmitters, chemical substances that are released when a neuron fires. Neurotransmitters can bind to receptors at the second neuron. They open ions channels, allowing ions to move in and outside of the channel. In turn, the second neuron also fires.

There's nothing more shocking than watching someone become famous for the wrong reasons. However, there is nothing worse than watching them fall from grace.
It's fascinating to see how industries react to their mistakes. We've all heard about celebrities who took too much alcohol and drugs. Some even died young because of it.
It's worse when stars make public their problems, and then are ignored by everyone. That's where we found ourselves last week.
Heath Ledger lost his long and successful career. He overdosed on prescription pills, and after a brief battle with death, he passed away.
His family and friends were unable to accept his death, and the media was quick to criticize him.
Heath was once one of the most gifted actors currently working. Two Academy Awards nominations went to Heath for his performance on Brokeback Mountain.
In addition to acting, Heath also wrote and directed films, including A Knight's Tale, Monster's Ball, and Iron Man 3.
Hollywood loved Heath, however he soon grew too big for his good looks. He became addicted to drugs and drank heavily. He was eventually able to get clean and went to rehab.
Now that he was sober, he wanted to make amends. He made a documentary called "Room 237," that chronicled the making and release of The Shining. It was supposed to hit theaters this year. However, it won't until next year.
