Slavery was at the heart of the struggle between the North and South in the 1850s. It also left Americans split over whether to extend slavery to newly acquired western territories. Congress established the military Reconstruction program which guaranteed political rights to Southern blacks in 1867. This was a significant breakthrough in American politics.

Radical Republicans challenged Andrew Johnson's policies often. They argued that his policies were too permissive and wouldn't result in complete equality for blacks. They also believed black voting rights were vital to the power base in the South. They wanted to punish Confederates by making resources and other resources of the North unaffordable to them. In addition, he urged the Southern states not to ratify the 14th Amendment, which granted citizenship to blacks. He opposed a bill to ratify Civil Rights Act, which was meant to end discrimination against African-Americans. He also vetoed legislation to establish the Freedmen's Bureau.
Andrew Johnson was the only Southern senator to remain loyal to the Union after the Civil War. He was also, for the duration of the Civil War, the only senator to be in office. He was also the South's only senator to not have voted for secession. He was therefore often seen as a traitor to South. He was also not impeached.
Congress passed the Reconstruction Act that divided the South in five military districts when the Civil War ended 1865. It also passed the Tenure of Office Act. This Act stripped the President of all his rights to remove federal officials, without Senate approval. In addition, the Congress refused to seat newly elected Southern members of Congress.
Congress returned to Congress in December 1865. They passed the Freedmen's Bureau Bill. The bill provided shelter as well as suffrage to previously enslaved individuals. The House of Representatives, however, voted to impeach Johnson on February 1868. In May 1868, Johnson was acquitted of the charges by one vote. However, he was not convicted by the Senate.
Johnson was criticized for being too prejudiced and for miscalculating the support he received from the public during his term as President. Johnson attacked Republicans with vile language throughout his presidency. On several occasions, he appeared to be drinking excessively. However, he lost his second term to the Republicans but was elected Vice-President in 1865.

Sexton stated that he finds the job very satisfying. CNN interviewed Sexton and said that he has a lot of fun. "You know, we see these big rigs come through town, and we'll follow them. "Sexton began following truckers almost 20 year ago.
"It's all I felt," he stated.
He loved the story of the driver who pulled into an abandoned gas station near Los Angeles. Sexton remembered, "The man was looking for somewhere to put the load." "He drove along the road and saw this structure. He pulled over and went in. "There were two large roll-off containers full of stuff. He took out everything and began to fill up the truck. "Then, he took everything out and started filling up the truck again. There were tires, rags. furniture, mattresses. boxes, bottles, cans. It was a complete mess. But it had been cleared out before he arrived. There was no trash."
This begs the question: Why? This particular spot used to be a recycling center. People would drive there to recycle their trash. Sexton explained that people would bring home their household items, and then take them to the building. After they were done, they would dispose of the empty containers.
You might see this happen hundreds of times a day. It can happen hundreds of time per week. Eventually, the truck is so full of junk it stops running. The owner eventually abandons the vehicle.
