Sexton loved the story about the driver who pulled over at an abandoned gas station close to Los Angeles. "The guy was looking for someplace to put his load," Sexton recalled. "He drove along the road and saw this structure. So he pulled over and went inside. "There were 2 large containers that had been rolled off, and they were full of stuff. The man got everything out of the truck and began filling it up again. "Then he looked at the place and decided to unload everything. There were many old tires, furniture, rags and mattresses. "It was just an absolute mess. But it had been cleaned before he arrived. There wasn't any trash."
This begs the question: Why? It's because this area used to be a recycle center. People would drive from all over the country to recycle their trash. Sexton explained, "They would bring their household goods and take them here," and they would then empty the containers.
Now, because of the way the law works, once a container reaches its destination, it cannot be opened.So no matter how often someone takes something out of it, the thing will never be emptied.Every time the truck comes by, it has to start over again. It can happen hundreds of time per week. Eventually, the truck is so full of junk it stops running. The owner eventually decides to dump the truck.
Trash isn’t the only problem we face on the planet.
Many of these tiny plastic pieces end up in landfills and incinerators. Others get washed into rivers or oceans.And when they reach the ocean, they often end up in the stomachs of fish.
