FAQ
Which is the most mysterious spot on Earth?
Antarctica is the world's most mysterious place on Earth.
We find this place so fascinating. Because it is unlike any other spot on Earth.
It is isolated, remote, and very hard to visit. This site has more to it than meets your eye.
These wild animals are also found in this natural wonder.
Let's find out how this mysterious destination became so famous.
Antarctica: The South Pole
Antarctica is not known by anyone. Some believe it refers to "land of ice". Others believe it comes from Greek mythology.
In ancient Greece, Antarktis was the name given to the island where Zeus' twin brothers were born. According to some legends, one of these twins was born in winter. The term antarctic is derived from this.
Others believe that the name is a combination of the Greek words anti and tropos which mean against and turn. This would mean land turned away from the sun.
Whatever the reason Antarctica holds a special fascination, people have always loved it.
It is the coldest, windiest, driest and highest continent. Because it is too frigid, there are no trees, animals, or plants.
Yet, the frozen desert is alive with life.
About 90 percent of all living things on Earth live here. About 50% of the world's plant and animal species can be found here.
What makes Antarctica so special? Here, water is frozen into ice rather than vaporizing into the air.
This causes large masses to form of ice which float high above the ground.
These floating glaciers cover over 80%. They continue to grow in size each year.
So far, the Antarctic ice sheet has grown 60 feet since 1960.
If the melting continues, sea level could rise up to 200ft. That could cause massive flooding around the globe.
This is not necessarily bad news. Some scientists think global warming might be beneficial. They suggest that rising temperatures could cause ice sheet melt faster, leading to floods that flush out toxic chemicals from soil and bodies.
Others, however, warn that this theory sounds almost like a plot for a science fiction film.
Is there a Hollywood blacklist?
There is an Hollywood blacklist.
But, the list has not been made public. The names are not known to us. This is why it matters.
The reason behind the secrecy was that blacklisted directors and actors wouldn't be able find work. This would result in studios losing money as the actors and directors would have to go out on their own. It would mean they would reduce their expenditure on movies. That would reduce the opportunities for blacklisted filmmakers. Which would lead them to go bankrupt.
Which could ultimately result in more victims.
In other words, if someone is trying to make an Oscar winning movie, they might have to sign a contract that says they won't speak openly against their employers. Any director or producer who would like to be nominated for an award is subject to the same rules.
You hear stories of directors being pressured to remove scenes from films. Directors might threaten to leave projects that don't reflect their vision.
This is why Hollywood has a blacklist. If you make negative comments about your employer, it's likely that you will be unemployed. This is bad news for anyone.
There are many people who have been falsely accused. They have had to fight for their freedom.
This must be stopped before it happens again. We need to ensure everyone has the right of expression.
We need to get rid of Hollywood's blacklist.
Have you ever wondered how much trash is produced worldwide each day?
The United Nations states that an average person produces more than 2.5 pounds of waste per day. That's over 25 billion pounds of garbage each year!
Most of the trash ends up at incinerators and landfills. But, what happens to those dumpsters? It goes to the United States, where most of it is exported. It is then dumped in other countries, where it pollutes their ecosystems. But now, thanks to the work of one man, we know exactly where all this trash goes. Mike Sexton is his real name. He is the owner of Waste Watchers. His job involves monitoring the movements and routes of trash trucks across North America. He reports back to us about the next steps.
Sexton stated that he finds the job very satisfying. CNN interviewed Sexton and said that he has a lot of fun. "You know, we see these big rigs come through town, and we'll follow them. "Sexton started following truck driver almost 20 years back.
"It's all I felt," he stated.
Sexton's favorite story was about a driver who stopped at an abandoned gas station in Los Angeles. Sexton said that the man was searching for a place to store his stuff. "He drove down the street and saw this building. He pulled over and went in. "There were two enormous roll-off containers filled with stuff. He took out everything and began to fill up the truck. "Then, he took everything out and started filling up the truck again. There were a bunch of old tires, rags, furniture, mattresses, boxes, bottles, cans, and whatever else. It was a complete mess. But it had been cleaned out before he came along. There was no trash."
This begs the question: Why? This particular spot used to be a recycling center. People would drive there to recycle their trash. Sexton said that people would bring their household items to the building and then leave empty containers behind.
This can happen hundreds of times a week. It can happen hundreds of time per week. Eventually, the truck is so full of junk it stops running. And eventually, the owner decides to abandon the vehicle.
Trash is not the only problem our planet faces.
These tiny plastic particles make up the majority of the particles. Some end up in incinerators or landfills. Others get washed into rivers or oceans. And when they reach the ocean, they often end up in the stomachs of fish.
Experts warn us that we may soon face an international food shortage if things don't change. Experts warn that "if we keep going the way we are, we're not going make it," although scientists agree that the world is heading toward disaster. Most people, however, don't seem to be concerned.
How does the brain regulate the functions of the body?
The brain relays messages to other parts of the body to ensure their functionality. Everything in your body is controlled and managed by your brain. It tells you your stomach to digest food; your lungs to inhale air; and it tells you your arms and legs how to move.
Your brain is made up of billions upon billions of nerve cells that are connected together in groups called neuronal groups. Neurons communicate with each other by sending electrical signals called action potentials on axons. Each neuron has its own cell membrane around its nucleus. The membrane contains channels that allow ions like sodium and potassium to enter the cell and leave it. The neuron fires when there is ion movement.
Neurotransmitters are chemicals released when a neuron fires. Neurotransmitters are able to bind to receptors in the second neuron. This opens ion channels that allow ions to flow in and out. As a result, second neuron fires as well.
Neurotransmitter production occurs when a neuron in the presynaptic receives an impulsive signal from another. The impulse travels along the synapse connecting the two neurons. The transmitter binds to the receptors on the postsynaptic neural cell, which triggers the firing of that neuron.
Neurotransmitters are important for communication within the nervous system. They also coordinate activity between different brain parts.
