FAQ

How does your brain control your body's functions?

The brain sends messages to other organs and muscles to ensure they work together. Your body's functions are controlled by your brain. It tells both your stomach and lungs what to do; it also controls your legs and arms.

Your brain is made up of billions upon billions of nerve cells that are connected together in groups called neuronal groups. Neurons communicate by sending electrical signals, called action potentials, on axons. Every neuron has a cell wall around its nucleus. There are channels within the membrane that allow ions such a sodium or potassium to enter and exit the cell. The electric charge that causes the neuron's fire is created by ion movement.

When a neuron is activated, neurotransmitters release chemicals into the space between it and the next neuron. Neurotransmitters are able to bind to receptors in the second neuron. This opens ion channels that allow ions to flow in and out. As a result, the second neuron fires too.

Neurotransmitter production occurs when a neuron in the presynaptic receives an impulsive signal from another. The impulse travels along the synapse connecting the two neurons. The transmitter binds to the receptors on the postsynaptic neural cell, which triggers the firing of that neuron.

Neurotransmitters are important for communication within the nervous system. They coordinate brain activity among different parts.

Ever wonder how much trash gets produced each day around the world?

According to the United Nations there are more than 25 billion tons of garbage produced each year.

Most of the trash ends up at incinerators and landfills. But, what happens to those dumpsters? Most of that trash is shipped out of the country. It is then shipped out and dumped in other countries. This pollutes the ecosystems. But now we know, thanks to one man. Mike Sexton is his real name. He runs Waste Watchers, a company that monitors the movements of trucks carrying trash all across North America. He reports back to us about the next steps.

Sexton claims he is very satisfied with his job. "We've got a lot of fun," he told CNN. "We see big rigs coming through town and we'll follow them. "Sexton began following truck drivers almost 20 years ago.

He said, "I fell in love with it."

Sexton loved the story about the driver who pulled over at an abandoned gas station close to Los Angeles. Sexton described, "The guy was looking somewhere to put his load." "He drove down the road to see this building. He pulled over and went in. "There were two enormous roll-off containers filled with stuff. The man got everything out of the truck and began filling it up again. "The man looked around the area and decided to unload all of it. There were a bunch of old tires, rags, furniture, mattresses, boxes, bottles, cans, and whatever else. "It was just an absolute mess. But it had been cleaned out before he came along. There wasn't any trash."

This begs the question: Why? This particular spot used to be a recycling center. People would drive there to recycle their trash. Sexton said that people would bring their household items to the building and then leave empty containers behind.

This can happen hundreds of times a week. It can happen hundreds of time per week. Eventually, the truck is so full of junk it stops running. The truck eventually stops running and the owner decides that it is time to get rid of the vehicle.

Trash, however, isn't the only problem facing our planet. As you may have noticed, things are getting worse.According to experts, pollution levels have risen dramatically in recent years.More than half of all water bodies on Earth are polluted.Pollution from industrial chemicals has increased by more than 30 percent since 1980.Even the air we breathe is becoming increasingly toxic.A study by the World Health Organization found that the average person inhales around 100 million particles daily.

The majority of these particles are made of small pieces of plastic. Others get washed into rivers or oceans. And when they reach the ocean, they often end up in the stomachs of fish.

Experts warn of a possible global food crisis if nothing is done. One expert said, "If we keep going as we are going, we're never going to make it," but most people don’t seem concerned.

Is there a more mysterious place than the Earth itself?

Antarctica is the world's most mysterious place on Earth.

Why is this place so amazing? Because it is unlike any other spot on Earth.

It is very remote and isolated. But there is more to this site than meets the eye.

Some of the most bizarre wildlife species can also be found in this natural wonder.

Let's see how this incredible destination became famous for its mystery.

Antarctica: The South Pole

No one knows exactly why Antarctica was named Antarctica. Others believe it means "land with ice". Some believe it means "land of ice". Others believe it is Greek mythology.

In ancient Greece, Antarktis was the name given to the island where Zeus' twin brothers were born. According to one source, one of the twins was conceived in winter. Thus, the term antarctic.

Others believe the name was derived from the Greek words tropos, which means turn, and anti, meaning against. This would be land turned away form the sun.

Whatever the reason Antarctica has always been a fascination for people.

It is the continent with the lowest, windiest and highest temperatures. There are no trees, plants, or animals here because it is too cold.

Yet, life is abundant in this frozen wilderness.

It houses approximately 90% of all Earth's living organisms. About 50% of the world's plant and animal species can be found here.

What is it that makes Antarctica so unique? Here, water freezes into ice instead of evaporating into the air.

This creates large masses of ice that float above the ground.

These glaciers are responsible for covering 80% of the continent. And they're growing larger every year.

So far, the Antarctic ice sheet has grown 60 feet since 1960.

If the melting goes on, the sea level may rise by as much as 200 feet. It could result in massive flooding all over the world.

But not everyone thinks this is bad news. Some scientists believe that global warming can be beneficial. They say that as temperatures rise, the ice sheets might melt faster, causing floods that flush out tons of toxic chemicals from our soil and bodies.

However, others caution that this theory sounds a lot like a plot in a science fiction movie.

Why do actors get blacklisted in the first place?

If you are an actor, you will get more rejection than if you are a writer. As an actor, it's likely that you will be rejected a lot. It doesn't matter, because you will eventually find someone you love.

Actors are typically very talented and can earn a living virtually anywhere. Actors don't really care about making money. Actors love acting, and love telling stories. If you are an actor, you will most likely put yourself out there.

Sometimes, auditions are cancelled because you are either too young or too old for the job. Sometimes, you may lose an audition for a movie. That happens a lot.

But once you've been cast, you may also face criticism. Many people will tell you you look horrible or that you shouldn't be wearing make-up. If you're lucky, you won't even hear negative comments.

Sometimes, you might be criticised for playing a role that isn’t authentic or realistic. Maybe you play a gay man, and everyone thinks you're straight. Maybe you are a woman who is tough but cries often.

Or maybe you're asked to change your voice. Sometimes they ask for you to sound like a male or female. They usually want you sound better.

These criticisms should be ignored. Actors sometimes feel like failures when they hear they were wrong. But they're not guilty of anything.

They weren't born with the talents that made them famous. They may not fit the bill sometimes, no mater how hard they try.

An actor can be blacklisted for many reasons. Some people don't like actors. Others feel that actors are lazy. Others believe actors cheat.

No matter the reason, it is important to remember that you will not be blacklisted if there are other jobs available. There are many opportunities for you to find your role.

Keep trying and you will eventually succeed.
