How Statues were Moved
For many decades, scientists have claimed that monoliths were removed from their quarry using a method called "ecocide." The stones were either pulled or rolled by animals on logs to their destination. However, new research suggests this was not the case.
Statues were instead dragged to their final destination by humans. This was accomplished by tying ropes to their heads and pulling them on both sides.
Researchers have named the way that these monoliths are dragged, "the Rapa Nui Method". This was the same method used for the tuataras (lizards) on the island, as they were also dragged across the top of a hill, using their trunks as handles.
How the statues got from the quarries to the stone platforms, or ahus, where they were displayed, is also a mystery. The ahu, or stone platforms, are steep in some places and it would be impossible to move the statues by wheel.
Oral legend tells that the Rapa Nui dragged their statues from the quarry, but this is not confirmed by any scientific studies.
Many experts believe that Rapa Nui were the ones who carved these moai. The material used for some of the moai was similar to other types, but this particular statue is red Puna Pua - an elusive and rare volcanic rock.
The statues, which were carved in the form of ancestors or a combination of both, were linked to rituals and became spiritual centers for Rapa Nui. It led to many debates about where they should be placed and why.
The statues had eyes inserted into their sockets, which were inlaid with white coral and obsidian. The faces had been etched so that they resembled human beings and indicated the statues as powerful spirits.
