When Martin Van Buren was birthed, it was only six years since the colonists' declaration of independence. He was raised in Kinderhook, a village in upstate New York. Early on, he spent time in his father’s pub, which attracted local politicians and lawyers including Aaron Burr. In time, he became a lawyer himself.
Van Buren became involved in politics after he was voted into the State Senate. In 1815, he was appointed as surrogate for Columbia County. Later in 1816, he became the New York Attorney General. His political alliances changed constantly and he kept his loyalties and intentions secret. Critics labelled him as a devious unprincipled political figure.
Van Buren was appointed Governor of New York by Andrew Jackson in 1828. In 1829, he resigned his position as governor to become the secretary of state for Jackson. In the Jacksonian system, he expanded it in the cabinet. In 1832 he became the eighth president of the United States after winning the presidential election.
During his term as president, Van Buren was responsible for the Panic, which brought down the stock market and brought the country to a complete standstill. Van Buren tried to ensure the solvency of his national government by fighting against the creation and establishment of a United States Bank. He also argued for an independent treasury. He also continued Jackson’s policy of relocating American Indians in western lands. The Trail of Tears was the result of this. Many Native Americans died.
Van Buren retired in his Kinderhook estate Lindenwald after his unsuccessful attempts to win reelections in 1840 and 1848. There he watched the slavery issue tear apart the country during the 1850s. He remained committed to the Democratic Party but argued against its pro-southern faction and supported more moderate Democrats like Stephen Douglas.
Van Buren succumbed to heart failure in his later life and died on July 1, 1862 at the young age of 79. He was interred at the Kinderhook Dutch Reformed Cemetery Albany Avenue. An annual ceremony commemorating his birthday takes place at the site. The cemetery is beautiful and well worth a trip.
