Combat artists capture the reality of war
In WW2, combat artists captured the realities of war by capturing images of the horrors and complexities of the conflict. These artists often took photographs of the war in close quarters and embedded themselves with the units they were assigned. Orville Fisher was one of these artists. He wore a waterproof pad of pen to his wrist and sketched D-Day.
These artists also document the war with thousands of works of their art, which were used in publications and magazines. Many of these artworks were also on display in the United States. These paintings chronicled battles and actions in various European and Pacific theatres. These images often had captions that describe the events.
Artists For Victory group
Artists for Victory, a non profit group that united over ten thousand artists in WW2, was a group that did not profit. They partnered with governments and businesses to create visual materials about war to promote the war effort. This group had one mission: to win the war for the United States.

The group was founded by artists to combat philistinism and to use their artistic talents to help the war effort. It was the first group of its kind, and the group pledged to produce five million hours of art for the war effort.
Looted art
Many pieces seized by Nazis during World War II, have been returned to the rightful owners. Recent case involving Nudes in a Landscape by Pierre Auguste Renoir reveals that the painting was taken from the German family of a Jewish banker. Hugo Simon, a banker and art-collector, returned the painting to his heirs.
While most of the art stolen during WW2 has been returned, many pieces remain in bad hands. Many of these pieces were shipped to the USSR during World War II. Fortunately, Russia is legally obliged to return them. Many of these works are in museums in Moscow, and the Polish government plans to submit seven more restitution requests to Russia.
Recovered objects from the war
There are several resources for finding out the provenance of art objects. The National Gallery of Art conducted extensive research into the history of art object. They focused their efforts on World War II and discovered many connections between art objects, and their owners. You can also find extensive archival reference and wartime histories on the website, which makes it easy to determine where an object came from.

After the war, there were three main collections of objects. These collections contain a mixture of cultural and historical objects that were looted or traded. The Nazis plundered cultural property, especially Jewish property. To identify the most valuable collections, they used systematic methods. Some artifacts that were seized were eventually returned by the owners to their rightful owners. But many are still missing.
Donated objects for the USSR
A new CDROM of the National Archives of the United States documents the movement of cultural treasures from the United States back to the Soviet Union. This CD-ROM presents facsimile inventories of almost half a million cultural objects. Most of these cultural treasures were plundered by the Nazis and taken to Germany, but the Soviet copies of these items do not exist in Russia's archives.
These items were used to aid the war effort by the USSR. During World War 2, more than 25,000,000 Soviet citizens were killed in a fierce battle against Nazi Germany. Despite multiple defeats over the first 18months of war, the Soviet Union rebuilt itself and marched to Berlin. The United States provided huge military and economic support to the Soviet Union in order to help make the war effort possible.

What is the most secretive town in the world?
The answer may shock you. This may make you feel uncomfortable as it challenges your perception of reality and the way we live. However, there's a reason for this place to exist. It's not what we would expect.
It was called the City of God by ancient Greeks. In the Bible, it was known as the City of Destruction.
It's known in India as Kashi (Kashmir). In Russia, it's called Novgorod.
Here in America, however, it is called The Village That Disappeared.
A small community of 1200 people in western New York State vanished. With the exception of a road marker pointing to its former site, there were no remains: cars, bodies, houses.
The little village vanished, with no trace of its existence. Some say the earth swallowed it up. Others claim a meteorite strike destroyed it. Others believe that aliens took it.
The people of this once-thriving community, however, are positive that the town won't disappear forever. They had just relocated to another town.
A website is available to track the disappearance and recovery of Zugspitz, which was lost in the Great Depression.
The question is, where did this place go? It's in Switzerland, actually!
Zugspitze lies on the border between Austria and Germany. Lake Zugspitze can be found just beyond the summit.
It has always fascinated my that so many towns have disappeared but others still exist. What is the difference between some towns that disappear and others that survive? I set out to find out.
I wanted more information about the mysterious disappearing of towns. What makes a town disappear? What makes a place disappear?
There are many theories regarding the phenomenon of towns disappearing. One theory is that a city disappears after all buildings have been demolished. Another theory holds that the town simply relocates to another location. A third theory holds that the town did not exist.
The fact is that hundreds of towns all over the world have been swept away by the ground, despite theories to the contrary. This video looks into the history of those places and investigates their current status.
How does the brain control the functions in your body?
To ensure that other organs and muscle functions work together, the brain sends messages. Everything that happens within your body is controlled by the brain. It tells both your stomach and lungs what to do; it also controls your legs and arms.
Your brain is made up billions of nerve cell networks connected in groups known as neurons. Neurons communicate by sending electrical signals, called action potentials, on axons. Each neuron has its own cell membrane around its nucleus. There are channels within the membrane that allow ions such a sodium or potassium to enter and exit the cell. Ion movement creates the electric charge that causes the neuron to fire.
Neurotransmitters are chemicals released when a neuron fires. Neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the second neuron, opening ion channels so ions can pass in and out of the channel. The second neuron also fires.
Neurotransmitter releases occur when a presynaptic neurons receives an input from another neuron. An impulse travels along a synapse that connects the two neurons. The transmitter binds to the receptors on the postsynaptic neural cell, which triggers the firing of that neuron.
For communication within the nervous systems, neurotransmitters are essential. They coordinate activity between the different parts of your brain.
What dark secrets are there in Hollywood?
Hollywood is full of secret societies. Some secret societies are cultlike groups that have strict rules and rituals. Other clubs are for people who share common interests.
There are other nefarious entities that have a significant influence on the industry. Companies such as the MPAA, which determines film ratings, or the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), that set music licensing fees, are examples of these.
Numerous unions and guilds also represent actors, directors, writers, producers, etc. Many of the major TV networks and movie studios are owned or controlled by large corporations.
The point is that no matter how secretive any group may seem, someone somewhere knows exactly what they do. However, we shouldn't fear them.
Instead, we should embrace these facts. Because they give us information that allows us to make better decisions.
These people tell us what movies and songs will succeed, and which books will sell best.
They help us make decisions about what we will buy, watch, listen to, or read.
We can trust their advice and we can ignore it if it contradicts our values.
They are more powerful than ever because we chose to ignore them. They are the supreme arbiters of taste.
You are free to ignore their messages if that bothers you.
Now let's take a look at some lesser-known yet very real Hollywood secret society.
You can see why they are so vital.

Hollywood scandals that stunned the world
There's nothing more shocking than watching someone become famous for the wrong reasons. There's nothing more shocking than watching someone fall from grace.
It's fascinating to see how industries react to their mistakes. We have all heard of celebrities who overdosed on drugs and alcohol. Some even died young because of it.
The worst part about this is that these same stars come out with their problems and are ridiculed by everyone. This is where we ended up last week.
Heath Ledger, after a long and successful professional career, finally gave in to his demons. He overdosed on prescription pills, and after a brief battle with death, he passed away.
His family and his friends struggled with the news and the media went after him.
Heath was once one of the most gifted actors currently working. He was nominated for two Academy Awards for his performance in Brokeback Mountain.
In addition to acting, Heath also wrote and directed films, including A Knight's Tale, Monster's Ball, and Iron Man 3.
Hollywood loved Heath, however he soon grew too big for his good looks. He started to use drugs and drink heavily. He eventually went to rehab and was clean.
He wanted to make amends now that he was sober. So he made a documentary called "Room 237," which chronicled the making of The Shining. It was originally scheduled to release this year, but it won’t be available in theaters until next.
Heath tried unsuccessfully to get into Hollywood again, but nothing happened. In fact, Heath was twice arrested on drug charges.
We're not saying Heath should have been allowed back into show business. But it would have been nice to get some help before things spiralled out of control.
We hope Heath’s story can be an example to other people who believe they can still have it all.
