According to court documents that were unsealed Friday, the FBI confiscated a number classified documents during a recent search of Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago in Florida. The documents are classified "top secret" - the highest classification - and "TS/SCI".
Mark Zaid a national security attorney told NPR: "Classification levels are based upon the amount of damage that a leak would cause to U.S. interest." The designations can be marked with codes, which only allow those who have the clearance to see it.
These codes are used to identify specific parts of a document that are not classified, so people can quickly and easily share the less sensitive sections.
In the case of top secret documents, the highest designation is called "top secret," but the document might also be classified under a "code word" like "SECRET (CODE WORD)." Zaid explained, this means that only people who are cleared to use that codeword can view the information. They might also have to go through an additional security review process.
These classification levels protect the nation's secrets and those which, if disclosed publicly, would harm U.S. interest, according to officials.
