Antarctica is named for no one. Some say it means "land on ice." Others believe it derives from Greek mythology.
Antarktis was an ancient Greek name that was given to the island where Zeus and his twin brothers, Zeus. According to one source, one of the twins was conceived in winter. Hence, the word antarctic.
Others believe that it is the Greek word anti, which means against, and tropos, which refers to turning. This would mean that the land was turned away by the sun.
Whatever the reason Antarctica has held a special fascination for people, it is undeniable.
It is the highest, coldest, windiest, dryest, and most populated continent. There are no trees, plants, or animals here because it is too cold.
Yet, life is abundant in this frozen wilderness.
It houses approximately 90% of all Earth's living organisms. There are about 50% of the world's animal, plant and plant species.
What is Antarctica? Here, water freezes into ice instead of evaporating into the air.
This causes large amounts of ice to float above ground.
These floating glaciers cover 80% of the continent. They're getting bigger every year.
So far, the Antarctic ice sheet has grown 60 feet since 1960.
The sea level could rise to 200 feet if the melting continues. That could cause massive flooding around the globe.

You might be asked to change the sound of your voice. Sometimes they ask you to sound like a guy or a girl. They usually want you sound better.
It is best to ignore these criticisms. Actors often feel like they've failed if they're told they did something wrong. But they're not guilty of anything.
They just weren't born with the talent that made them famous. And sometimes, no matter how hard they try, they don't fit the bill.
An actor can be blacklisted for many reasons. Some people don't like actors. Others think actors can be lazy. Others still believe that actors cheat.
Whatever the reason, it's important to realize that you will not get blacklisted if you keep trying. There are plenty of jobs available and you'll find them.
You'll succeed as long as you keep trying.

A small community of 1200 people in western New York State vanished. A road sign pointing to the former location of the town was all that was left, except for a few bodies and cars.
This tiny town vanished without any trace. Some say the earth swallowed it up. Others claim that a meteorite hit destroyed it. Others claim it was taken away by aliens.
The residents of this once prosperous community believe that whatever happened, their town is not gone forever. They had just relocated to another town.
There is even a website dedicated to tracking the disappearance of the lost city of Zugspitz.
So, where exactly did this town go? It's in Switzerland.
Zugspitze lies on the border between Austria and Germany. Lake Zugspitze can be found just beyond the summit.
It has always fascinated and astonished me to see how many towns have vanished but still exist. Why is it that some disappear while others live on? I decided to investigate.
I wanted to learn more about mysteriously disappearing towns. What is the secret to a town's disappearance? What makes a place disappear?
There are many theories to explain the phenomenon of disappearing towns. One theory is that a city disappears after all buildings have been demolished. Another theory states that the town simply moves to another location. A third theory states that the town didn't exist at all.
No matter what theories you may have, there is no doubt that many towns across the globe were swallowed by the ground. This video examines the past and present status of these areas.

The majority of this garbage ends up in incinerators or landfills. But what happens when the dumpsters become full? It goes to the United States, where most of it is exported. It then gets dumped in foreign countries, polluting their ecosystems. However, now we know where all that trash goes. Mike Sexton is his real name. He runs a company called Waste Watchers.He spends his days watching the movements of trucks transporting trash across North America. He then reports back about what happens next.
Sexton says he finds his job very satisfying. CNN asked Sexton if he thought it was a lot of fun. "We'll be following these big rigs through town. "Sexton began to follow truck drivers around 20 years ago.
"It's all I felt," he stated.
His favorite story involved a driver who pulled off at an abandoned gas station near Los Angeles. Sexton described, "The guy was looking somewhere to put his load." "He drove down the road to see this building. He backed up and entered the building. "There were two enormous roll-off containers filled with stuff. The guy took everything out and started filling up the truck again. He then looked around and decided to load everything. There were many old tires, furniture, rags and mattresses. "It was just total chaos. But it had been cleared out before he arrived. There was not a single piece of trash.
This begs the question: Why? This particular spot used to be a recycling center. People would drive there to recycle their trash. Sexton explained that people would bring home their household items, and then take them to the building. After they were done, they would dispose of the empty containers.
This can happen hundreds of times a week. This could happen hundreds times per week. Finally, the truck stops running completely due to its excessive junk. The owner eventually decides to dump the truck.
However, trash is not the only problem on our planet.
Most of these particles are made up of tiny pieces of plastic.Some of these plastics end up in landfills or incinerators. Others get washed into rivers or oceans.And when they reach the ocean, they often end up in the stomachs of fish.
