Laos was an Indochina-controlled territory for many decades. The United States entered the Vietnam War, in 1961. Shortly thereafter, a secret war was fought in Laos. The CIA conducted a covert operation against Pathet Lao, a communist group.

These units were used for attacking North Vietnamese soldiers. These units were defeated in the end and the United States was forced to withdraw from Laos.

Thousands of pro-American Laos were killed or forced to live in prison camps. Others were escorted to the jungle with their guards. Some families were wiped out for good. Those who survived were left to live in caves or farm fields at night.
At times, CIA managed battle strategy, but most of the time it was left to the locals. Many villages were devastated and thousands of civilians were murdered by the CIA's bombing raids.
Throughout the "Secret War", tens of thousands of Lao patriots were killed. The United States withdrew its support for Laos from South Vietnam following the war. The CIA couldn't continue to function as before.
The CIA then decided to create a clandestine army of Hmong soldiers. This was to circumvent the Geneva Accords ban on direct military support. Many Laos believed that Communists were trying overthrow the nation. They resisted.
During wartime, the CIA created "Lima Sites," ports of entry in the country, to help Hmong troops move and get supplies. LS-36 is one of the most prominent Lima Sites. Another important site is LS-20A.
The CIA ultimately decided to evacuate Laos from the conflict. The United States ended its military and financial support for Laos after the Paris Peace Treaty was signed, ending the Vietnam War. In the end, the CIA's Laos operation was a success. The CIA was able to stop Laos communism's spread.
The Secret War in Laos was complicated and messy. The CIA's efforts at fighting the communist threat to Laos were successful. But it was a huge disaster for American relations with Lao government.
