FAQ
How does the brain control the functions in your body?
The brain relays messages to other parts of the body to ensure their functionality. Everything in your body is controlled and managed by your brain. It tells your stomach to digest food and your lungs to breathe air; it tells your arms and legs to move.
Your brain is made up billions of nerve cell networks connected in groups known as neurons. Neurons communicate with each other by sending electrical signals called action potentials on axons. Every neuron has an outer cell membrane that surrounds its nucleus. The cell membrane houses channels that allow ions, such as potassium and sodium, to enter and exit the cells. Ion movement creates the electric charge that causes the neuron to fire.
Neurotransmitters, chemical substances that are released when a neuron fires. Neurotransmitters are able to bind to receptors in the second neuron. This opens ion channels that allow ions to flow in and out. As a result, second neuron fires as well.
Neurotransmitter release occurs when the presynaptic neuron receives an impulse from another neuron. The impulse travels along the synaptic pathway that connects both neurons. The transmitter binds directly to the receptors in the postsynaptic nervous neuron, and triggers the firing.
Neurotransmitters are important for communication within the nervous system. They also help coordinate activity between different parts of the brain.
Did you know that there are approximately 1.6 billion metric tons of trash produced every day in the world?
According to the United Nations, the average person produces over 2.5 pounds of daily waste. That adds up to over 25 billion pounds of garbage per year!
The majority of this garbage ends up in incinerators or landfills. But what happens when the dumpsters become full? All that trash ends up being shipped out of country. The rest is dumped abroad, where it pollutes other ecosystems. Now, we know the exact location of all this garbage. Mike Sexton is his full name. He owns a company called Waste Watchers. He spends his time watching trucks hauling trash around North America. Then he reports back to us about what happens next.
Sexton states that he finds his work very fulfilling. CNN spoke with Sexton that they have a lot fun. "We see big rigs coming through town and we'll follow them. "Sexton began to follow truck drivers around 20 years ago.
"It's all I felt," he stated.
His favorite story involved a driver who pulled off at an abandoned gas station near Los Angeles. Sexton said that the man was searching for a place to store his stuff. "He saw the building as he drove down the road. He pulled over and went in. "There was a pair of large, full-sized roll-off boxes. The man removed everything from the truck and started to load it again. He then looked around and decided to load everything. There were a bunch of old tires, rags, furniture, mattresses, boxes, bottles, cans, and whatever else. "It was just a total mess. But it had been cleaned out before he came along. There wasn't any trash anywhere."
What is the explanation? The answer is that this location was once part of a recycling facility. People who knew about it would drive to this location to recycle their garbage. "They'd bring their household items and take them to this building," Sexton explained. And after they finished, they would leave the empty containers behind.
This can happen hundreds of times a week. The truck can be stopped running if it is so full of junk that it has to come back hundreds of times per week. The owner eventually abandons the vehicle.
Trash isn’t the only problem we face on the planet.
Many of these tiny plastic pieces end up in landfills and incinerators. Some end up in rivers and oceans, while others end up in fish's stomachs.
Experts warn of a possible global food crisis if nothing is done. Experts warn that if we continue to go the same way, we won't make it. However, scientists and most people aren't worried.
What is the most surprising fact about your body?
There are two eyes, two ears. Two nostrils. Four limbs. A mouth, nose and penis. You're correct, there are more than 50 parts in our bodies. But, one thing is missing. The heart.
A heart is a pump that circulates blood throughout the body. The blood flows through the veins and arteries to carry oxygen and nutrients to the cells.
The heart pumps about 5 liters blood per minute. This is equivalent to a person drinking 2-3 cups coffee daily.
Blood flows throughout the heart 24 hours per day, 365 Days a Year. When you're asleep, your heart beats approximately 100 times per hour.
The color of someone's skin can tell if they are healthy or not. The capillaries are tiny blood vessels that can be seen on the skin's surface. These vessels carry blood back to the heart from the large blood vessels beneath the skin. When blood flow is blocked, the skin turns blue or purple.
People suffering from sickle cell disease have no red blood cells. Patients with sickle cell disease have their blood become sticky and harden, leading to severe illness.
You can use a bandage to stop bleeding if your cut is severe. Blood must continue to flow to allow the wounds to heal properly. To do this, doctors will insert a needle through your skin into the vein adjacent to the injury. This allows the blood to drain from the injured area.
Doctors can also insert catheters into the artery close to the area where the bloodclot has formed. This keeps the patient alive until the clot breaks up naturally.
Which is the most mysterious spot on Earth?
Antarctica is one of the most mysterious places on Earth.
What is it that makes this place so interesting? Because it is unlike any other spot on Earth.
It is remote, isolated, and extremely difficult to visit. However, there's more to this location than meets the eye.
You'll also find the strangest species of wildlife in this natural wonder.
Let's see how this incredible destination became famous for its mystery.
Antarctica: The South Pole
It is not known why Antarctica was called Antarctica. Some believe it refers to "land of ice". Others believe it comes out of Greek mythology.
Antarktis is the name Antarktis was given to an island in ancient Greece by Zeus' twin brothers. According to some legends, one of these twins was born in winter. Therefore, the name antarctic.
Others believe the name was derived from the Greek words tropos, which means turn, and anti, meaning against. This would mean that the land was turned away by the sun.
Whatever the reason Antarctica holds a special fascination, people have always loved it.
It is the continent with the lowest, windiest and highest temperatures. It is too cold to support trees, plants, and animals.
This frozen wasteland is still alive.
It houses approximately 90% of all Earth's living organisms. Here are approximately 50% of all the animal and plant species in the world.
What is Antarctica? Here, water freezes and becomes ice instead of evaporated into the air.
This causes large amounts of ice to float above ground.
These floating glaciers cover over 80%. They are growing in size every year.
The Antarctic ice has grown 60 feet so far since 1960.
The sea level could rise to 200 feet if the melting continues. It could result in massive flooding all over the world.
However, not all scientists believe this to be bad news. Some scientists suggest that global warming could actually be good for us. They claim that the melting of ice sheets could accelerate as temperatures rise. This would lead to flooding that removes tons of toxic chemicals and soil from our bodies.
Others warn that this theory sounds like something out of a science-fiction movie.
