Most of this rubbish ends up in landfills or incinerators. But, what happens when those dumpsters fill up? All that trash ends up being shipped out of country. The rest is dumped abroad, where it pollutes other ecosystems. Now, we know the exact location of all this garbage. Mike Sexton is his real name. He owns a company called Waste Watchers. He spends his time watching trucks hauling trash around North America. He reports back to us about the next steps.
Sexton says he finds his job very satisfying. "We've got a lot of fun," he told CNN. "We often see large rigs passing through our town and we will follow them. "Sexton started following truck drivers nearly 20 years ago.
"I just fell in love with it," he said.
His favorite story involved a driver who pulled off at an abandoned gas station near Los Angeles. "The guy was looking for someplace to put his load," Sexton recalled. "He drove down the road and saw this building. He stopped and pulled up, then he went inside. "There were 2 large containers that had been rolled off, and they were full of stuff. The guy took everything out and started filling up the truck again. "The man looked around the area and decided to unload all of it. There were tires, rags. furniture, mattresses. boxes, bottles, cans. "It was just a total mess. But it had been cleaned before he arrived. There wasn't any trash anywhere."
This begs the question: Why? It's because this area used to be a recycle center. People would drive from all over the country to recycle their trash. Sexton explained, "They would bring their household goods and take them here," and they would then empty the containers.
This could happen hundreds of time per week. It can happen hundreds of time per week. Eventually, the truck is so full of junk it stops running. The owner finally decides to stop using the truck.
Trash is not the only problem our planet faces.
