There is one podcast that stands out among the many on the National Public Radio's (NPR) docket. It's the name for a podcast that covers a broad range of topics including biology and psychology as well as medicine in a somewhat unconventional manner. The program's main purpose is to allow the public to see the mind of an expert in a particular subject.
Shankar Vedantam (a well-known scientist/entrepreneur) produced the program. It is now available on hundreds of public radio stations across the nation. Vedantam is a former reporter at The Washington Post, who recently departed the newsroom to take a stab at his own independent production company. One of the many perks of his new gig is the opportunity to explore topics that would otherwise be out of bounds to him as a freelancer.
While the budget was modest, the show did not sacrifice science. It is worth a listen for all discerning listeners. The show was a hit and has been ranked in the Top 25 of NPR's most downloaded podcasts. With nearly three million downloads to its credit, it is hard to believe that Hidden Brain did not become a weekly staple of NPR's schedule. After a three year hiatus, it has resurfaced as a regular program. It is expected that the show will return to regular programming soon. The biggest challenge for the podcast is finding new material. The Hidden Brain listeners will be happy to know that Vedantam is an expert in all things and that the show's content can be as diverse as the subject matter.
Vedantam is not only a podcast host, but he has also been widely recognized as a science fanatic. He is the author of two books on neuroscience and has published research papers. Vedantam also founded an independent production company. Vedantam, as the title implies, is a firm believer in science. Perhaps the show's greatest achievement was in setting a standard for quality in radio's murky waters. We can only imagine the show's greatest days yet.

As with many NPR programs, the show's best days may be well behind us, but you can bet that Shankar Vedantam is looking to make his mark in other areas. This podcast will hopefully continue to be the brainchild a knowledgeable journalist. For the next time you're stuck in the office, you might just want to snag a few listeners with your favorite cocktail. We hope you find your hidden brain and learn some valuable lessons. Until next time, happy podcasting! The best of luck. This program is a success because it is simple: make the most of what's available. Everybody needs a little assistance from time to time. Although the hidden brain is a long-awaited project, it will be a huge success with the support of its new occupants.
FAQ
What is the most secretive town in the world?
You might be surprised at the answer. It might even make you uncomfortable because it challenges our perception of reality and how we live. But there is a reason why this place exists. And it is not what you would expect.
It was called the City of God by ancient Greeks. It was called the City of Destruction by the Bible.
It is called Kashi (Kashmir in India). It is called Novgorod (Russia).
But here in America, it goes by another name - The Town That Disappeared.
One tiny town in western New York State lost its 1,200 inhabitants without trace. With the exception of a road marker pointing to its former site, there were no remains: cars, bodies, houses.
This little community vanished and no trace remains to indicate where or when it disappeared. Some say the earth swallowed it up. Others claim a meteorite strike destroyed it. Some believe that it was taken by aliens.
The people of this once-thriving community, however, are positive that the town won't disappear forever. They had just relocated to another town.
Even a website exists to help track down the disappearances of the lost city Zugspitz.
You might be wondering where this town went. It's in Switzerland, actually!
Zugspitze is located on the border between Germany and Austria. Just beyond the summit of the mountain is a huge lake called Lake Zugspitze.
It has always fascinated my that so many towns have disappeared but others still exist. Why do some disappear while others survive? I set out to find out.
I was interested in learning more about these mysterious towns that are disappearing. What causes a town to disappear? What makes a place disappear?
There are many theories regarding the phenomenon of towns disappearing. One theory says that a town disappears when all the buildings are demolished. Another theory suggests that the town simply moves somewhere else. A third theory holds that the town did not exist.
The fact is that hundreds of towns all over the world have been swept away by the ground, despite theories to the contrary. This video examines the history and current status of these places.
How does the brain control the functions of your body?
To ensure that other organs and muscle functions work together, the brain sends messages. Everything that happens within your body is controlled by the brain. It tells you your stomach to digest food; your lungs to inhale air; and it tells you your arms and legs how to move.
Your brain is made of billions, or neurons, of nerve cells. Neurons communicate by sending electrical signals, called action potentials, on axons. Every neuron has an outer cell membrane that surrounds its nucleus. The cell membrane houses channels that allow ions, such as potassium and sodium, to enter and exit the cells. The neuron fires when there is ion movement.
Neurotransmitters, chemical substances that are released when a neuron fires. Neurotransmitters bind with receptors on the second nerve cell, opening ion channel channels to allow ions in and out. In turn, the second neuron also fires.
When a presynaptic nerve receives an impulse, neurotransmitter release takes place. An impulse travels along a synaptic link between the two neuron. The transmitter binds to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, triggering the firing of the postsynaptic neuron.
They are vital for the communication between nerve cells. They are also responsible for coordinating activity between various parts of the brain.
Is there a Hollywood blacklist.
There is a Hollywood blacklist.
But the list isn't made public. We don't know the names. But, here's why it matters.
The secret reason is that directors and actors who are on the blacklist would not be able to find employment. So they'd go out of business, which means that the studios would lose money. They would also cut back on their spending on movies. That would reduce the opportunities for blacklisted filmmakers. They would then go bankrupt.
This could eventually lead to more victims.
A contract may be required to agree to not speak against employers if someone attempts to make an Oscar winning movie. The same goes for any director or producer who wants to get nominated for an award.
Producers often pressure directors to cut scenes from their films. Directors threaten to abandon projects that don’t conform to their vision.
This is why Hollywood has a blacklist. If you make negative comments about your employer, it's likely that you will be unemployed. And that's not good for anyone.
There are many people who have been falsely accused. They have had to fight for their freedom.
This must be stopped before it happens again. Everybody should be able to freely express themselves.
So we need to take down the Hollywood blacklist.
What dark secrets are there in Hollywood?
Hollywood is filled with secret societies. Some secret societies are cultlike groups that have strict rules and rituals. Other clubs are for people who share common interests.
But there are also more nefarious organizations that control much of the industry. Companies such as the MPAA, which determines film ratings, or the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), that set music licensing fees, are examples of these.
Numerous unions or guilds also represent producers, writers, actors, etc. Large corporations own most major studios and networks of television.
It doesn't really matter how secretive an organization may appear, there is always someone who knows exactly what they do. However, we shouldn't fear them.
Instead, we should embrace and celebrate them. Because they give us information that allows us to make better decisions.
They tell us what movies will likely succeed, what songs will be popular, and what books will best sell.
They help us make decisions about what we will buy, watch, listen to, or read.
We can trust them so we can ignore their advice when it doesn't suit our taste.
Because we have chosen to ignore their power, they are even more powerful. They become the ultimate arbiters of taste.
They can be ignored if you don’t like what they have to say.
Let's now look at some lesser-known, but still very real Hollywood secret organizations.
Observe why they are important.
