Red blood cells are missing in people with sickle-cell disease. They become very sick when their blood becomes hardened and sticky.

Bandages are used to stop bleeding after you have cut yourself. For the wound to heal properly, blood must continue to flow. To do this, doctors will insert a needle through your skin into the vein adjacent to the injury. This allows blood to drain from the area.
