Martin van Buren was born six years after the colonists gained independence from the British. He was brought up in Kinderhook village, located in upstate New York. He spent his early life assisting in his father's tavern, which was frequented by local lawyers and politicians, including Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. Over time, he began to practice law.
Van Buren first entered politics in 1813 after being elected to the State Senate. In 1815 he held the position of surrogate in Columbia County. He later served as New York's attorney general. He constantly changed his political alliances, and he always kept his intentions and allegiances secret. Critics called him an unprincipled and devious politician.
In 1828 Van Buren was elected Governor of New York, and in 1829 he gave up the position to become President Andrew Jackson's secretary of state. In the Jacksonian government, he was instrumental in expanding the system of political patronage. In 1832 he ran for the presidency and won, becoming the eighth President of the United States.
During his presidency, the economy suffered from the Panic of 1837, which caused the stock market to crash and brought the nation to a standstill. Van Buren opposed the creation a new bank for the United States in order to maintain the solvency the national government. He also advocated a separate Treasury. Van Buren continued Jackson's policy of moving American Indians westward, which led to the Trail of Tears and the deaths of many Native Americans.
Van Buren, who had failed to win re-election both in 1840, and 1848, retired to his Kinderhook property, Lindenwald to watch the slave issue tear the country apart in the 1850s. He remained in the Democratic Party while opposing its pro-Southern faction. Douglas and other moderate Democrats were his supporters.
Van Buren, who was 79 years old when he died in July 1862 from heart failure, suffered his final years. He was interred at the Kinderhook Dutch Reformed Cemetery Albany Avenue. An annual ceremony commemorating his birthday takes place at the site. This beautiful cemetery is well-worth a visit.

Why did this happen? Well, the answer is that this particular location used to be part of a recycling center.People who learned about this facility would drive here to recycle their trash. Sexton explained, "They would bring their household goods and take them here," and they would then empty the containers.
