Sometimes the CIA managed battle strategy. But most of it was left to the locals. Many villages were destroyed, killing thousands of civilians by CIA air strikes.
During the "Secret War", thousands of Lao patriots were murdered. The United States pulled its troops out of South Vietnam in the aftermath of the war. Laos also lost their financial support. Consequently, the CIA was unable to operate as it had before.
Thus, the CIA decided that a clandestine Hmong army would be built. It was a way to circumvent the Geneva Accords' prohibition on direct military assistance. Many Laos believed Communists were trying the overthrow of the nation. However, they resisted.
During wartime, the CIA created "Lima Sites," ports of entry in the country, to help Hmong troops move and get supplies. One of the most important Lima Sites was LS-36. Another important site was LS-20A.
The CIA eventually decided to evacuate Laos following the war. The United States ended its military and financial support for Laos after the Paris Peace Treaty was signed, ending the Vietnam War. In the end, however, the CIA operation in Laos proved to be a success. The CIA helped to stop Laos' spread of communism.

So why did this happen? This particular spot used to be a recycling center. People would drive there to recycle their trash. "They'd bring their household items and take them to this building," Sexton explained.And after they finished, they would leave the empty containers behind.
