This remarkable turnaround is amazing considering the decades-old famine. A relatively wealthy class known as the "donjo" or "masters of money" has emerged and is participating in private market activities. It has done this despite harsh economic sanctions imposed by the United States and other countries.

North Korea's public transportation system is another important aspect of daily life. Even though most North Koreans don’t have cars, they use public transportation to travel around the country. Public transport is essential because the majority of North Koreans cannot afford to buy cars or taxis. Although North Korean public transport looks primitive and out of date, it is still the lifeline for most people. North Korea's economy heavily depends on mining. To make ends meet, many need alternative income.
