What is your most secretive community?
The answer may shock you. It may even make it uncomfortable, as it challenges our perceptions of reality and our lives. But there is a reason that this place exists. It isn't what you would expect.
It was also called the City of God in ancient Greek. In the Bible, it was known as the City of Destruction.
It is also called Kashi in India (Kashmir). It's known in Russia as Novgorod.
It's called The Town That Has Disappeared here in America.
One tiny town in western New York State lost its 1,200 inhabitants without trace. No bodies, cars, houses, nothing was left behind except a road sign pointing to its former location.
This little community vanished and no trace remains to indicate where or when it disappeared. Some believe the earth swallowed them up. Others believe it was destroyed by a meteorite. Still, others say aliens took it away.
The residents of this once prosperous community believe that whatever happened, their town is not gone forever. They had just moved from one town to the other.
There's even a website that tracks the disappearances and recoveries of Zugspitz.
Then, where is it? Well, it's in Switzerland!
Zugspitze is located on the border between Germany and Austria. A huge lake, Lake Zugspitze, is located just beyond the summit.
It has always fascinated and astonished me to see how many towns have vanished but still exist. What is the difference between some towns that disappear and others that survive? I decided to investigate.
I wanted to know more about the mysterious disappearing towns. What causes a community to disappear? How can a town disappear from existence?
There are many theories to explain the phenomenon of disappearing towns. One theory states that a town vanishes when all its buildings are destroyed. Another theory is that the town moves to another place. Another theory suggests that the town has never existed.
No matter what theories you may have, there is no doubt that many towns across the globe were swallowed by the ground. This video examines the history and current status of these places.
What is the most mysterious area on earth?
Antarctica is the most mysterious continent on Earth.
Why do we find this place so intriguing? Because it is unlike anything else on Earth.
It is very remote and isolated. But there is more to this site than meets the eye.
These wild animals are also found in this natural wonder.
Let's find out how this mysterious destination became so famous.
Antarctica, The South Pole
Antarctica is named for no one. Some say it means "land on ice." Others think it comes from Greek mythology.
In ancient Greece, Antarktis was the name given to the island where Zeus' twin brothers were born. One of the twins was said to have been born in winter. The term antarctic is derived from this.
Others believe the name was derived from the Greek words tropos, which means turn, and anti, meaning against. This would translate to land that is turned away from the sun.
Whatever the reason Antarctica has always been a fascination for people.
It is the coldest, windiest, driest and highest continent. It is too cold to support trees, plants, and animals.
Yet, life is abundant in this frozen wilderness.
It houses approximately 90% of all Earth's living organisms. Here are approximately 50% of all the animal and plant species in the world.
What is Antarctica? Here, water freezes into ice instead of evaporating into the air.
This causes large ice masses to rise above the ground.
These glaciers cover more than 80% of the continent. They're getting bigger every year.
So far, the Antarctic ice sheet has grown 60 feet since 1960.
The sea level will rise up to 200 feet if melting continues. This could lead to massive flooding across the globe.
Not everyone believes this is bad news. Some scientists believe that global warming can be beneficial. According to scientists, global warming could be good for us because the melting of the ice sheets will accelerate, which can lead to floods that release toxic chemicals into our soil and bodies.
However, others caution that this theory sounds a lot like a plot in a science fiction movie.
Did you know that there are approximately 1.6 billion metric tons of trash produced every day in the world?
The United Nations states that an average person produces more than 2.5 pounds of waste per day. That's over 25 billion pounds of garbage each year!
Most of this trash ends up in landfill dumps or incinerators. But what happens when those dumpsters get full? The majority of this rubbish is sent out of the country. It is then shipped out and dumped in other countries. This pollutes the ecosystems. But now we know, thanks to one man. Mike Sexton is his real name. He is the founder of Waste Watchers. He watches over trucks that transport trash across North America. He then reports back to us on what happens next.
Sexton states that he finds his work very fulfilling. "We've got a lot of fun," he told CNN. "We see these big trucks coming through town, so we'll keep following them. "Sexton began following truckers almost 20 year ago.
"It's all I felt," he stated.
He loved the story of the driver who pulled into an abandoned gas station near Los Angeles. Sexton said that the man was searching for a place to store his stuff. "He drove down the road and saw this building. He pulled over and went in. "There were two large roll-off containers full of stuff. The man removed everything from the truck and started to load it again. "Then, he took everything out and started filling up the truck again. There were a bunch of old tires, rags, furniture, mattresses, boxes, bottles, cans, and whatever else. It was a complete mess. But it had been cleaned out before he came along. There was not a single piece of trash.
Why did this happen? It is because the location used to belong to a recycling centre. People who found out about this facility would drive to it to recycle their trash. "They'd bring their household items and take them to this building," Sexton explained. And after they finished, they would leave the empty containers behind.
This can happen hundreds of times a week. It can happen hundreds of time per week. Eventually, the truck is so full of junk it stops running. The owner finally decides to stop using the truck.
But, this isn't the only problem that our planet is facing.
The majority of these particles are made of small pieces of plastic. Some are washed into rivers and oceans. Others end up with fish in their stomachs.
Experts warn that the world may soon face a shortage of food if we don't make any changes. Experts warn, "If you keep going like you're going," we could soon face a global food shortage. But most people don't seem to be worried, even though scientists are unanimous in warning us that the world is heading towards disaster.
