The Ebbinghaus illusion is an optical illusion that occurs when a stimulus appears larger than the size of its surroundings. Its appearance is dependent on how large the surrounding objects are perceived and how big the stimulus is in the retina. The flash-lag effect confirms the size perception, which causes objects to appear identical at a later date. Participants were shown two sets each of four identical surrounding discs at different times, depending on their position on the retina. It was evident that the size of the central discs on one side of the retina changed significantly, creating a flash-lag effect.
